Business Continuity Planning (BCP)
"Planning to ensure continuation of business operation in the event of a disaster." Business continuity planning goes beyond disaster recovery planning to include the actions to be taken, resources required, and procedures to be followed to ensure continued availability of corporation's essential services, programs, and operations in the event of unexpected interruptions.
The overall objective should be to prevent or recover from business interruption, which could result in unacceptable impact to the organization (such as loss of revenue, market share, reputation etc.).
Ask yourself what are you doing to reduce the risk of lost revenues, lost market share and minimized reputation?
How much downtime can you tolerate?
Recovery Time Objective (RTO) A Recovery Time Objective, or RTO, is the number of hours or days in which an organization wants to recover a resource or resume a business activity. An organization's business continuity plan is designed to meet the RTO's the organization chooses. For example, it may be determined that customer service must be functioning again after an interruption within one (1) day. The RTO is one (1) day. The same organization, on the other hand, has a RTO for its ERP application is four (4) hours. In some businesses, an RTO might be measured in minutes.
Recovery Point Objective (RPO) describes the age of the data an organization wants the ability to restore in the event of a disaster. For example, if an organization's RPO is 6 hours, they want to be able to restore systems back to the state they were in, as of no longer than 6 hours ago. Any data created or modified inside a recovery point objective will be either lost or must be recreated during a recovery.
