Server Heartbeat Monitoring
What is Server Heartbeat monitoring?
Server Heartbeat monitoring uses various tests to check the status of a customer's server(s). Many monitoring systems monitor server(s) via internal networks, or using software installed on the server(s) themselves. This service monitor server(s) from the perspective of a user on the Internet, alerting customers when their clients can no longer access their Web site.
How does it work?
Server Heartbeat Monitoring allows customers to choose between three different monitoring methods.
- The first method is a simple Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) ping. An ICMP ping is a simple and time-honoured way to determine whether a server is responding to network requests.
- The second method is an HTTP get. This goes a step further than an ICMP ping, and determines whether a web server is responding to requests on a given host. Note that a positive HTTP response indicates network connectivity as well, although a negative HTTP response does not necessarily mean that the monitored host is completely unreachable.
- The third method tests Domain Name Service (DNS) resolution. This test does not actually monitor a host, but rather the DNS service provided to it. This is important as well, as if the DNS for a host is not resolving, no one will be able to connect to it by host name or URL, regardless of the status of the actual server.
What happens if a customer's server(s) go down?
If a customer's monitored host should stop responding, they will be notified by email, text pager, or both (based on their choice). To maximize flexibility and provide for diverse support arrangements, customers can specify different email addresses and pager numbers for different hosts.
